HISTORICAL MONUMENTS – LANDMARKS
ARENI - In Vayots Dzor region wine making has a history of 2000-2500 years. Areni is one of the oldest and famous villages, located on the banks of the Arpa river, which is famous by wine factories. Areni wine is made from Areni grape variety which is a result of natural selection on the land area situated 1000-1200m above sea level. The winery produces the following two wines: Red dry table wine and Red table semi dry wine. These wines are made by the local traditional methods, which have been known since time immemorial.
The church of the Holy Mother of God is located in Areni and was founded in 1321. It has been the cultural and spiritual center in the region of Vayots Dzor.

NORAVANAK - is a remarkable architectural monastery complex of the 13th-14th centuries. Noravank is located in Noravank canyon, in the southern part of the region. This wonderful canyon is rich with rare flora, medical herbs, wild fruits, springs. In the beginning of the 13th century Noravank was the famous cultural and spiritual center of Syunik District and the Orbelee princes residence. |

THE CARAVANSERAI OF SELIM - in medieval Armenia numerous buildings had been built along commercial routes for the accommodation of travelers. One of those, the caravanserai of Selim, was built in 1332. This caravanserai offered hospitality to travelers who used the highway crossing the Selim (Soulema) mountains. It is the best preserved of all medieval caravanserais in Armenia. |
