Yerevan….the rose-colored capital of Armenia…. it is named as such because most of its buildings use a pink shade of “tuf” stone which is quarried in Armenia. This is the most prominent feature of Yerevan’s cityscape.

2As we get acquainted with Yerevan, we should start with the Erebouni museum and Fortress, which was founded in 782 B.C., 29 years before Rome, the “Eternal City”, was built; we’ll pass through Republic Square, as well as by Yerevan State University. Our next stop is essential to all who visit Armenia… Tsitsernakaberd memorial and museum for the 1915 Genocide, this is one of the most impressive monuments in Yerevan. Lunch in one of the Armenian Traditional Restaurants in Yerevan.  You will enjoy a tour of this enigmatic city, visiting the remarkable Matenadaran Library and Research Institute of Armenia with close to 17,000 rare manuscripts, one of the richest depositories of manuscripts and books in the world. Cascade – which is a huge white staircase built on the Yerevan hillside in the 1970s, with water fountains running down the sides, all reminiscent of a natural river or stream cascading. It connects the central district to Haghtanak Park –“Victory” Park to the center of the city. The structure has escalators so that it is unnecessary to manually ascend the stairs all the way to the top.

You have some quite spectacular photo opportunities before a landscape of unparalleled beauty and majesty. The monastery is the site where St. Gregory the Illuminator was incarcerated and it is a pilgrimage destination for every believer. It is especially a time for reflection upon the work of our Church’s patron saint, Gregory the Illuminator, who spread the light of Christianity in Armenia and inspired King Drtad to proclaim Christianity as a state religion in 301.  This had a determinate impact on the Armenian people and their history. Next, we will take the path through the narrow gorge, revealing Noravank Monastery, nestled inside the deep red landscape of the tuf stone mountains.

Lunch will be served near Noravank Monastery. Areni1 cave complex multicomponent site and late Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age ritual site and settlement  is located near the Areni village in southern Armenia along the Arpa River. Day 5 - September 29, 2018

The first official celebration of “Erebuni-Yerevan” was held in October of 1968: the 2750th anniversary of our capital was celebrated and today its 2800th anniversary of foundation of EREBUNI-YEREVAN.

66In the 5th year of his reign the king, Argishti the First, built it as a town-fortress. Cuneiform record left by Argishti the First say the following: “In the greatness of the god Khald, Argishti, Menua’s son, has built this impregnable fortress and called it Erebuni for the power of the country of Biaini and to enemies’ horror. Argishti says… The land was unpopulated, and here I have done great work. In the greatness of the god Khald, Argishti, Menua’s son, powerful king, the king of the country of Biaini, the ruler of the city of Tushpa”. This remained in historical record and gave scientists the opportunity to make a more accurate date of birth for Yerevan – 782 B.C. Erebuni-Yerevan was founded 29 years earlier than Rome and has about the same age as Babylon, Nineveh and Persepolis, but unlike them it has become one of prosperous cities of the 21st century.

6In general the day is started with the parade of water sprinkling trucks from the France Square, moving towards the

Republic Square through the Mashdots Avenue, announcing the beginning of the celebrations of ancient & modern Erebuni-Yerevan.

Continuously the day will be very interesting for everyone, as numerous programs have already become traditional for the City Day celebration, including many stage performances of jazz, rock, folk music and dance, even flash mobs to be also held in various parts of city and many other special events dedicated 2800th anniversary of our capital Erebuni-Yerevan.
