DAY 4 , AUGUST 17 - ETCHMIATSIN - KARAS WINERY

On the day of the Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God,
honoring Mary's journey into heaven, the blessing of the grapes
takes place immediately after the celebration of the Divine Liturgy.
Led by the presiding clergymen the procession ascends into the open air Holy Altar of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Echmiadzin.
As thanksgiving for the fruitfulness of the year, the church blesses the grapes,
the queen of fruits and distributes to all people.
The Holy Virgin Mary is considered the "Tree of Life" who bears the "Good Fruit" - Christ, for our salvation. Christ resembled Himself to the Vine (John 15:1) and blessed the cup of wine to be His Blood.

On this glorious day we will visit one of the ancient treasures of Christian history - the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. It is the Vatican of the Armenian Apostolic Church, the place where Surb Grigor Lusavorich (St. Gregory the Illuminator) saw a beam of light in a divine vision, and where he built the first Mother Church of Armenia (303AD).
We will also participate in DIVINE LITURGY.
Continuing our day, we’ll make a short stop at the Churches of St. Hripsime (UNESCO). Both of them are unique for their different types of central-domed churches developed in the Early Middle Ages and became widespread in Armenia during the 7th century.
Let’s take a branch of grapes with us, put it on the altar for blessing and
 eat blessed grapes…
This truly is a different kind of experience…

Today is also a special day in the Armenian winemaking, this is why we will also visit Karas - one of the best wineries in this region. The name means ‘amphora’ in Armenian, it is seated under the eternal gaze of Mount Ararat where tradition and expertise come together.

DAY 5, AUGUST 18 - GARNI - GEGHARD

Today we will visit Garni, which is a rare pre-Christian pagan temple maintained in Armenia, dating back to the 1st century AD.
It is said that music has a way of speaking without lyrics and can somehow speak directly to a person’s soul. Today’s visit will give us a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share and feel this language of music expressed through the DUDUK, an Armenian musical instrument which is arguably one of the most powerful instruments in its ability to move someone to their very core.
Next is an enjoyable walk down to the Garni Canyon where one cannot help admiring the volcanic basalt formations and natural beauty. It’s like a “Symphony of stones'' – one of the most dramatic scenes in Armenia.
Today we’ll have an opportunity to follow the entire process of Lavash ((flat bread) making, one of the finest jewels of Armenian cuisine. It is made in a “tonir” (ground oven).  The preparation, meaning and appearance of traditional flat bread as an expression of culture in Armenia has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Then we will reach Geghard (Cave monastery) (UNESCO) architectural complex (12-13th centuries), carved out of one monolithic rock. Due to the extraordinary acoustics, when the local singer begins to sing in this chamber it is hard to believe a large choir isn’t singing… be aware it is only one man…

St. Vardan Mamikonyan (commander-in-chief) led the Armenian army against Sassanid Persia.

The prominent feature of the majority of khachkars is the cross with a solar disk under it.
